Applebee's

With an attempt to be a "neighborhood" bar and grill but with a national reputation, this place has a number of nice, if overly safe, choices. This menu was last updated 8/26/2009.

Menu

  • Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad. $8.99. Tasty, and exactly what you expect from the name. Enjoy!
  • Grilled Shrimp 'n' Spinach Salad. $9.99. That's an interesting combination, and quite within my rules.
  • Santa Fe Chicken Salad. $8.99. Not for the meat, but for the sour cream and tortilla strips.
  • BBQ Chicken Salad. $9.99. The bacon, the cheese, the BBQ sauce. It all adds up to fattening.
  • Grilled Chili-Lime Chicken Salad. $8.99. Not only interesting, but quite healthy.
  • Oriental Chicken Salad. $9.49. Deep fried chicken tastes great! No.
  • California Shrimp Salad. $9.99. Not to my tastes, but within my rules. Enjoy if you like.
  • Pecan Crusted Chicken Salad. $9.99. Looks great, and it's probably iffy, but you could do worse.
  • 9 oz. House Sirloin. $13.99. Just be careful about the side dishes.
  • 12 oz. New York Strip. $15.99. Again, be careful about your side dishes.
  • Bourbon Street Steak. $13.99. Careful about those sides, and as with all the steaks, don't do this too often.
  • Chop Steak. $9.99. This falls under the ground beef heading. Buy a more expensive piece of meat if you must have steak.
  • Steak & Grilled or Fried Shrimp (or Honey Barbeque Chicken or Riblets). $14.99. Okay, you're pushing it now, and the answer is no if you're looking at the fried shrimp, but if you're hungry enough, you could do worse.
  • Steak & Portobellos. $9.99. This is fine, but a 4 ounce steak sure isn't much. Don't go in hungry.
  • Shrimp 'N Parmesan Sirloin. $15.99. Okay, they finally went over the line. Move along. Nothing to see here.
  • Honey BBQ Baby Backs. $16.49. Certainly not with the fries, but if you substitute a healthier side dish, this is marginally okay.
  • Applebee's Riblets. $10.99. Even more of the sweet barbecue sauce which makes me pause, and those fries are a no-no as well, but if you make that substitution, this is passable.
  • Fajitas. $11.99. This is okay as long as you don't layer on those fatty toppings. They give you guacamole, cheese and sour cream, but you need to minimize these to keep it in the okay column.
  • Fiesta Lime Chicken. $10.99. At most places, the equivalent meal is on my marginally okay list, but Applebee's adds the tortilla strips to this one to push it over the edge. Leave this one alone.
  • Margherita Chicken. $9.49. This one just barely crosses the line for me as well. Truth be told, I could see myself wavering on this, but for now, I'll say no.
  • Roasted Garlic & Asiago Chicken. $10.99. A little too cheesy to be that healthy.
  • Chicken Tenders Platter. $9.49. Do I really need to tell you why not?
  • Garlic Herb Chicken. $9.49. Less flavorful, but quite healthy.
  • Cajun Lime Tilapia. $10.49. Beautiful choice. I love this one.
  • Double Crunch Shrimp. $10.99. Love that deep fried taste. No.
  • Hand-Battered Fish & Chips. $9.99. More deep fried goodness. No.
  • Parmesan Tilapia. $10.49. Nice and tasty. Enjoy!
  • Garlic Herb Salmon. $12.49. Another great, and tasty, choice.
  • Crispy Orange Chicken Bowl. $10.49. Sorry. It looks good, but no.
  • Chicken Broccoli Pasta Alfredo Bowl. $10.49. The alfredo sauce does it in.
  • Cheddar-Jack Mac & Cheese with Chicken. $10.49. Of course not.
  • Three-Cheese Chicken Penne. $10.49. Alfredo and cheese is a double whammy. No.
  • Grilled Teriyaki Bowl. $10.99. Available in beef or chicken, either of which is fine.
  • Quesadilla Burger. $8.99. Oh my god, NO!
  • Bruschetta Burger. $8.99. Like any other ground beef dish, no.
  • Surf 'n Turf Burger. $9.29. Still no.
  • Steakhouse Burger with A-1 Steak Sauce. $8.99. Yeah, that doesn't make it any healthier. No.
  • Fire Pit Bacon Burger. $8.99. Yet another no.
  • Cowboy Burger. $8.99. Not getting any better.
  • Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Bacon Cheddar Cheeseburger. $7.49-$8.79. As Wesley said to Inigo, "Get used to disappointment."
  • Brewtus Steak Burger. $9.49. Yet another burger gets a no vote.
  • Oriental Chicken Rollup. $7.99. Moving away from burgers to deep fried foods. It's still a No.
  • Italian Chicken & Portobello Sandwich. $8.29. While this doesn't appeal to me, personally, it's fine for healthy eating. But substitute for those fries.
  • Blackened Tilapia Sandwich. $8.99. Another healthy choice, but be sure to 86 those fries.
  • California Turkey Club. $8.49. The turkey is fine, but the cheese and bacon drop it just below the line.
  • Chicken Fajita Rollup. $7.99. Not bad, but even better would be to substitute corn tortillas for the flour ones that are standard. I don't know if they do that.
  • Club House Grill. $7.99. Worse than the California Turkey Club. Sorry.
  • BBQ Pulled Pork Sliders. $6.99. Though the healthiest thing on the sliders menu, it sure ain't healthy.
  • Southern Chicken Sliders. $6.99. Heck, no!
  • Cheeseburger Sliders. $7.99. Of course not.
  • French Dip Sliders. $7.49. Nope.
